These paintings celebrate the artistry and heritage of straw work, a traditional craft in the Bahamas that is increasingly endangered. Through these works, I highlight the delicate balance between cultural preservation and modern consumption: deforestation, unsustainable harvesting, and underpricing have put this craft at risk, while younger generations show less interest as the economic and cultural value of the work is overlooked.
The series is both an homage and a critique — honoring the skill and ingenuity of straw artisans, while drawing attention to the disconnect between eager consumers and the effort required to make the craft sustainable. Each piece reflects the care, geometry, and rhythm inherent in the material, inviting viewers to consider the value of labor, heritage, and cultural continuity.
This series was born during the same period as my judo career, and it became my personal outlet — a way to express what I could not put into words. Cloudy Thoughts explores cycles of striving, pause, and tension, with repeated pen strokes reflecting moments of progress, regression, and reflection.
Created with a monochromatic palette, the works mirror the limitations I often encountered— figuratively, literally, or emotionally during my judo environment— and shows how form and meaning can emerge even within constraint.
