The installation The Gaulin Wife featured in the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas’ Website Article, The Nassau Guardian and the podcast Blank Canvas. I believe the response was so strong because this was during the time a national referendum for gender equality about women’s birth rights was taking place.

I first read the folktale in 2009 in a Highschool class when I transferred from an international school to a Bahamian school. The story resonated with my personal life (being a child of a Bahamian father, and foreign mother and always seen as foreign) it shaped my perception of my peers view point of me.

I had put together a team of family and friends to help construct the large scale installation under the limited 1 month window from receiving the acceptance email to launch date.

Featured in The Nassau Guardian newspaper, the question was suggested about how has Bahamian xenophobia affected Bahamians. The NE8 show was launched after the failed referendum.

The PLP government led a rushed campaign to rally support to voting yes to 4 bills, one of them including the right for Bahamian women to pass on their birth rights to their children. In response ”Vote No” groups were formed, some members thinking that all 4 bills would be passed if any were voted yes. This misinformation led to a failed referendum. Later when I checked in 2021 the bill for women’s birth right was passed, thankfully.
